Lake Chala, also referred to as Lake Challa, is a crater lake positioned on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. This natural wonder was formed around 250,000 years ago to the east of Mount Kilimanjaro, approximately 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) north of Taveta, Kenya, and 55 kilometers (34 mi) east of Rombo District. Encircled by a steep crater rim reaching a maximum height of 170 meters, the lake offers a mesmerizing sight to behold.

With an average annual rainfall of about 565 millimeters (22.2 in), Lake Chala experiences significant evaporation, averaging nearly 1,735 millimeters (68.3 in) annually. Roughly 80 percent of the lake’s inflow is sourced from groundwater, primarily originating from rainfall within the montane forest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro, ranging in elevation from 1,800 to 2,800 meters (5,900 to 9,200 ft). It takes approximately three months for groundwater to make its way to the lake. From 1964 through 1977, an estimated annual volume of 8,390,000 cubic meters (296,000,000 cu ft) of groundwater flowed into Lake Chala.
