Kenya's Park Fees Increase in 2024

Kenya’s Park Fees Increase in 2024

As of January 1, 2024, Kenya’s game reserves and national parks, among them the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, are implementing raised park entry fees.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) manages twenty-five terrestrial national parks, twenty-nine terrestrial national reserves, four marine national parks, six marine national reserves, six national wildlife sanctuaries, and three captive wildlife management facilities. KWS’s main objective is to guarantee the effective preservation of these natural treasures for the benefit of future generations.

Despite the apparent significance of these entry fee hikes, they are anticipated to yield positive outcomes for the parks:

  1. Enhanced Conservation: The increased revenue will bolster conservation efforts, such as more frequent ranger patrols, intensified anti-poaching measures, and enhanced wildlife protection protocols.

  2. Improved Infrastructure: With additional funds, parks can invest in better-maintained roads and upgraded infrastructure, ultimately enhancing the overall visitor experience.

  3. Protection of Biodiversity: Parks will be able to intensify their efforts in safeguarding Kenya’s diverse and abundant biodiversity.

  4. Enriched Safari Experience: Visitors can anticipate a more fulfilling safari experience during peak seasons, with the potential for fewer vehicles and the satisfaction of knowing that their contributions directly support the preservation of this unique ecosystem.

New Entry Fee Structure

Effective Date and Adjustment: Starting from July 1, 2023, the validity period of entry fees for the Masai Mara National Reserve underwent a significant modification. The daily park entry fee was adjusted from a 24-hour period to a 12-hour one.

Requirement for Guests: As a result of this adjustment, every guest must possess a valid park ticket for each night they spend in the Mara Reserve. Additionally, on the day of departure, guests must ensure they are at the airstrip or have exited the reserve by 10 a.m.

Rationale Behind the Adjustment

Narok County Government’s Clarification: The Narok County government has stated that this fee adjustment is essential to cover the increasing costs associated with managing and conserving the reserve.

Appreciation and Call for Support: The authorities express gratitude for the continued support and commitment of visitors to the preservation of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Together, they aim to ensure its long-term protection and sustainability.

Impact on Safaris

Private Conservancies: Safaris utilizing the private conservancies around the Masai Mara will experience minimal impact. One entry fee will be included for all guests staying three nights (two days) in a Mara Conservancy. This implies that the price increase will only affect one entry. On the other day, guests can continue with their game drives within the conservancy.

Understanding the Increase in Park Fees

Fee Structure Transformation: The shift from a 24-hour to a 12-hour pricing scheme brings about substantial changes in the fee structure, which has already begun implementation.

Impact of Late Departures: In practice, guests who do not leave the park by 10:00 hours on the day of departure will incur an additional day fee. This may particularly affect those with late departures or afternoon flights.

Changes at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Nairobi National Park

New Requirement: The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) now mandates that all visitors to The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust must pay park fees for Nairobi National Park. This marks a departure from previous practices where such fees were not required for visitors to the Elephant Nursery.

Fee Structure: Visitors will now need to pay a park fee of US$ 100 per person, in addition to the entry fee of US$ 20 to visit the elephant orphanage.

Updates in Masai Mara National Reserve

Transition to 12-Hour Ticket Validity: Starting from July 1, 2023, the Masai Mara National Reserve has implemented a new ticket validity period of 12 hours. Guests staying outside the reserve will be required to pay a daily entry fee, with tickets valid from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Departure Protocols

  • By Road: Guests departing from the Masai Mara by road must exit the reserve no later than 10:00 hours. Exiting beyond this time will incur an additional entry fee.

  • By Air: Guests departing by air, whether residing inside or outside the reserve, must arrive at the airstrip no later than 10:00 hours. Extension beyond this time will result in an additional day in-park fee. A 2-hour transit ticket will be issued to guests arriving from facilities outside the reserve at the entry gate, allowing them to reach the airstrips within the reserve.

Confirmed Fee Increase for 2024

  • Narok County Government Decision: The Narok County Government has confirmed the Masai Mara Park Fees for 2024. From January 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024, the fee will be US$ 100 per non-resident adult per day. From July 1, 2024, onwards, it will increase to US$ 200 per non-resident adult per day, with children rates set at US$ 50 per day per child. These rates were initially proposed but have now been officially confirmed by the County Government as of mid-October 2023.

Impacted Travelers Notification

  • Booking Adjustments: Proposed pricing adjustments will apply to all confirmed and new bookings traveling after January 1, 2024. Impacted travelers will be contacted separately to arrange payment of these fees.

Hot Air Balloon Safari Landing Fee Increase

  • Fee Adjustment: The landing fees for hot air balloon safaris in the Masai Mara will increase by US$ 30. Discussions on pricing with various balloon companies in the Masai Mara are ongoing.
