How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda and Rwanda for 2024 to 2026

For the years 2024 to 2026, gorilla permits in Uganda can be directly booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) at a cost of $800 USD per permit. What is Gorilla Permits?

Book-Gorilla-Trekking-Permits

Gorilla permits are official documents issued by wildlife authorities in Uganda and Rwanda, granting tourists access to gorilla national parks for a limited time to observe gorilla groups in their natural habitats. These permits are essential for participating in gorilla trekking experiences in Bwindi National Park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and the Virunga ranges in Congo.

While obtaining permits directly from government authorities can be challenging, seeking assistance from a registered tour operator is recommended for a smoother process. To book a gorilla permit independently, tourists must contact the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or Kenlink Tours. After confirming permit availability, travelers will receive a form to complete and must transfer funds to the bank account or online payment system.

What Is Includes On Gorilla Permit Fee?

Gorilla permits encompass park entry fees, the expertise of a trained guide, and the dedicated support of park rangers throughout the trek. These permits provide access to the captivating realm of gorillas while ensuring safety and environmental stewardship. Included in the package are the essential costs for entering the park, the invaluable guidance of knowledgeable guides who enhance the experience with their expertise, and the reassuring presence of park rangers who accompany visitors every step of the way, ensuring a memorable and responsible encounter with these magnificent creatures amidst their natural habitat.

How many people are permitted for gorilla trekking each day?

How-many-people-allowed-for-gorilla-trekking

The total number of individuals permitted to partake in gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda on any given day is restricted. This measure aims to minimize behavioral disturbances to the mountain gorillas and mitigate the risk of them contracting contagious human illnesses. Additionally, it serves conservation purposes by managing human interaction with these endangered species.

A maximum of 8 individuals are permitted to trek each gorilla group daily, ensuring a more intimate and less intrusive experience with the gorillas. This restriction heightens competition for gorilla permits, especially during peak seasons, making early booking essential. We strongly recommend securing permits at least 3 months in advance to ensure availability, particularly during peak times such as school holidays or for large groups.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to over 12 habituated gorilla groups spread across four sectors: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushanga, and Ruhija. To track these magnificent creatures, advance booking of gorilla trekking permits is necessary due to high demand from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Can I Cancel My Gorilla Permit?

Gorilla permits not purchased on the initial booking day will be available for sale the following day, with no restrictions on the quantity each tour operator can acquire. Refunds and cancellation policies are as follows:

If a visitor is unable to track due to illness, upon recommendation by the Warden in Charge, UWA will refund 50% of the tracking fee. This applies only to visitors who have already tracked Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (MGNP).

Visitors who are unable to track gorillas in MGNP due to their movement to a neighboring country will receive a full refund on their permits. Those who track for the entire day but fail to view the gorillas due to any reason will be refunded 75% of the tracking fee. All refunds will be processed through the Reservation Office at UWA Headquarters in Kampala. However, Kenlink Tours will take over all this stressful cancellation journey on your behalf.

Upon cancellation, UWA will retain the following percentages:

  • 0 – 8 days before tracking date: no refund
  • 9 – 45 days before tracking date: 75% (25% refund to client)
  • 46-90 days before tracking date: 50%
  • 91 days and above before tracking date: 25% (75% refund to client) Any refund on the 30% deposit will be at the value of the permit. Permits must be sold at face value; anyone selling at a higher price will be penalized. The primary sale of permits by individuals or tour companies is illegal; all permits must be sold exclusively by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Payment for gorilla permits must be made directly to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
